Movie Preview: “Before We Vanish”

Strolling Invader-tp.jpg

“Before We Vanish” (original title 散歩する侵略者/ Sanpo Suru Shinryakusha) is a Japanese sci – fi thriller. It is an adaptation of the same named theatrical play which was first performed in 2005. The movie already had its world premiere in the Cannes film festival in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section. The movie was directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

Narumi Kase (Masami Nagasawa) is on bad terms with her husband Shinji Kase (Ryuhei Matsuda). One day, Shinji Kase goes missing. He comes back a couple of days later, but he seems like a totally different person. Shinji Kase is now gentle and tender. He goes for a walk every day. Shinji Kase tells his wife that he came to Earth to invade.

Meanwhile, a family is brutally murdered and an unexplained phenomenon takes place. Journalist Sakurai (Hiroki Hasegawa) covers the story of the murdered family.

The story line reminds me of a few other alien invasion movies. The topic is quite popular, the whole body snatcher theme has been done quite a few time, in different mediums. As this has already been screened to a big western audience, there are quite a few reviews out there, which elaborate that rather than a simple alien invasion movie it’s more of a study of the human mind. This I find rather intriguing.

“Before We Vanish” will premiere in Japan on the 9th of September, 2017. To add another layer to the story, a drama will be also start to air in September.

Second Summer, Never See You Again-p1.jpg

“Second Summer, Never See You Again” (original title 二度めの夏、二度と会えない君/ Nidome no Natsu, Nidoto Aenai Kimi) is a Japanese time – slip movie directed by Kenji Nakanishi.

Satoshi (Nijiro Murakami) is in his 3rd year of high school. He and transfer student Rin (Madoka Yoshida) are busy forming a band to perform at the school cultural festival even though there is a ban on forming bands at school. They perform live at the school cultural festival, but Rin later collapses. Tragedy ensues for Rin and Satoshi becomes devastated.

Satoshi then goes back in time to when he met Rin for the first time.

Here are teasers and a trailer for this upcoming movie:

The cast and director also already took the stage at the presentation of the movie to the public:

I’m expecting this to be deeply depressing and anything other than cheerful. Hopefully, the cast is able to deliver the emotions of the story well, especially Madoka Yoshida (who plays the female lead) for whom it’s the first movie of her career. I like the thematic of the movie besides the time travel gimmick. A rebellion against the school system by forming a band. Which might add nice music to the movie.

“Second Summer, Never See You Again” will be released on the 1st of September in Japan.
